Our Share of Household Duties

Our dishes are piled up in our sink. My husband said he was going to do them on Thursday. It is now Sunday. It drives me crazy seeing all those dirty dishes. But because he said he would do them, I leave them sit. I could easily do them myself in about twenty minutes and they would no longer cause me grief. So I wait patently for Ken to step up to the sink.

Why have I told you this? It's embarrassing for me to admit that my house isn't spotless.

I just wanted a segway into how chores are divided in our home. Despite years of women's liberation and a struggle to be on equal footing with men, I do the majority of the housework. Ideally, he would come home from work and sweep or throw a load of laundry in the washer. That scenario doesn't work for us.

I only work three hours a day, two in the morning and one at night. Ken works night shift and has trouble sleeping during the day. Life is easier for both of us if I take on the majority of tasks. He feels better more relaxed in the evening when the house is clean. I don't get upset anymore because he isn't doing what chores he agreed to take on. Taking away his household workload allows us to relax and enjoy the afternoon and evening together.

He does have a few things I expect him to do. He scrubs the shower and takes out the trash. He cleans out the fridge every month. The things I don't want to do. We alternate changing the cat litter.

As a bonus, because he doesn't feel like he is required to do housework, he is more likely to do the dishes or clean the living room. Because he wants to help me out.

It sounds like he has all the advantages in this setup. He works an eight hour day. I work three. If you add housework to that, I only work about four hours. I feel accomplished at the end of the day, which puts me in a much better mood.

In the end, this is really just so we can spend time together doing what we want to do, not doing housework.

Once upon a time (or just back in April)

I have a bucket list. There are quite a few items on it. One of those items was to do the Jeopardy! Online Test. I took it back in April. I thought I did horribly on it.

I guess I didn't do too poorly because I received an email today that invited me down to auditions in Chicago. I debated as to whether I should go or not because I know nothing will come of it. I don't think I have enough knowledge to have anything come of this. We also don't really have the funds for me to even travel to Chicago this one time.

I thought about it and decided to just go for it. I know that if I don't, I will always wonder what if. I replied back to reserve my interview time. This is what they sent back.

Congratulations! We are happy to confirm your appointment to participate in the full audition for Jeopardy!. That will consist of playing a “mock version” of Jeopardy! to assess your game-playing skills, a short personality interview, and being re-tested with a new 50-question test. If you pass all the requirements to become a contestant you will be entered into the contestant pool for one year. However even though you pass the test, we cannot guarantee that you will be invited to do the show. In fact, even though you are invited to the studio, there is no guarantee that you will appear on the show. You will be responsible for all expenses such as parking and travel to and from the audition center (We have no hotel discounts to offer). If you are invited to Los Angeles to do the show you would also be responsible for expenses to come to Los Angeles.

Your appointment is in: SHERATON CHICAGO HOTEL & TOWERS
301 EAST NORTH WATER STREET
CHICAGO, IL 60611
(312) 464-1000
MONDAY – SEPTEMBER 10th - 11:30 AM

The full audition will take approximately 2 – 2 ½ Hours. This is the complete interview, no other interview will be necessary. Come dressed as you might for an actual appearance on the show. Only the person with the appointment will be allowed in the interview room; guests cannot wait outside the interview room.

Best Regards,
Jeopardy! Contestant Department

I really hope it goes well. Wish me luck.

An Official Welcome and a Change in Topic

Well, I thought this would be a blog about adoption. Now the plan is to document my life.

Why the change?

I'm going to be honest. Our younger son has a few behavior issues. While they are not severe in any way, they are enough to question whether it would be a good idea to bring another child into our family. We are going to reevaluate our situation in six months or more. At that time, we will see if the situation has improved enough to pursue our plans.

In the meantime, I'm just going to plow along. I will share recipes I have tried, crafts that I will make, things we do with the family, and anything else I feel like adding. I hope you enjoy the journey with me.

Welcome!
